"東京に4年間すんでいました" is

"I lived Tokyo for 4 years [in the 1990s]." For past tense, it's better to give a specific time period.

"I have lived Tokyo for 4years" is "東京に4年間すんだことがあります"

"What can I do for you?" is the proper way.

"What can I do you for?" is meant as a joke. It's like saying "あなたにたいしてなにをしてほしいですか?"

ダニエルさんこんにちは。お時間のあるときで構いませんのでよろしくお願いします。\(^o^)/

「たまには息抜きが必要だよ!」と言うとき、「たまには=sometimes?」は文中のどこに置くべきでしょうか?

You need to relax sometimes!
You sometimes need to relax!

sometimes を文尾に置いても、動詞の前に置いてもどちらでもいいでしょうか? また、どっちに置いても同じ意味でしょうか?

もうひとつ質問です。この前のダニエルさんの英文の、

For "たまには" I would use "every now and then" or "once in a while":

"You need to relax every now and then"

or

"Once in a while, you need to relax"

--

In the sentence, "Those are very good examples you have given," you have given is referring to "examples". It doesn't modify it.

Said another way, the sentence means "You gave very good examples."

I hope that answers your question.

実際のこたえでは接続詞とyouは消えているんですが、なぜ消えるのですか?
補足
It's bad for the eyes to watch TV .
While you are lying down on.
これが正しい解答ですよね?

私が納得いかないのはこの2つの文は

TV lying down on.にはなりません

>「最近、何についてお祈りした?」と言う場合、

Use “What have you prayed for recently? でしょうか?” because there is no specific time period given.
If a specific time was given, it would be, e.g., “What did you prayed for in Church yesterday?”

Back in the late ‘80s, Janet Jackson had a song titled, “What Have You Done for Me Lately” (NOT “What did you do for me lately”).

>「一番最近、何についてお祈りした?」と言う場合、

I would still go with “What have you prayed for most recently?” because there is no way to tell when “most recently” was.

>most recently という表現はネイティブはしないというのをどこかで見ましたが、実際はどうでなのでしょうか?

Native speakers do use it but maybe not so much in casual conversations. In such conversations, it would be more like “What did you pray for the last time you prayed? ”

分詞構文の問題を考えるに考えましたがこれは絶対におかしいと思います。

ある一題の問題なんですが、分詞構文になる前の元の文を作ろうとしたのですが、あきらかに意味が通じません。
僕なりに考えたやつなんですが、
これです。
あ、すみません、まずは解答を提示しますね。
It's bad for the eyes to watch TV lying down on the sofa.です。

これを元の文に戻すと
It's bad for the eyes to watch TV.

To watch TV is lying down on the sofa.
というふうに解釈できるはずです。
なぜなら本文の主語はitつまりTo watch TVです。
しかしこれを主語にすると意味が通じません。
理屈はあってると思うのですが、なぜ意味が通じないのですか?

ちなみに意味はソファーで横になりながらテレビをみるのは目によくないです。

ダニエルさん、いつもすみません。willとbe going toについて少しおたずねしたいことがあります。中学3年生の問題に次のような長文がありました:

Toru: Are you enjoining dinner? You are not eating much. Are you OK?
Jim: I’m OK, but please help me after dinner.
Toru: Sure. What can I do for you?
Jim: I will make a speech at school tomorrow morning.
Toru: Don’t worry. What will you talk about?
Jim: First, I will talk about my country and my family. I will also talk about my favorite things. I like listening to music and reading books.
Toru: That sounds good. Will you speak in Japanese?
Jim: No, I won’t. I will speak in English. Do you think that the students will understand my English?

これは、次のようにしたほうが自然ではないのでしょうか?あるいはwillでもよいのでしょうか?

Toru: Are you enjoining dinner? You are not eating much. Are you OK?
Jim: I’m OK, but please help me after dinner.
Toru: Sure. What can I do for you?
Jim: I [am making か am going to make か have to make] a speech at school tomorrow morning.
Toru: Don’t worry. What [are] you [going to] talk about?

Jim:No,I['m not.] I [am going to] speak in English. Do you think that the students will understand my English?
なお、最後の“…the students will understand my English?”のwillにつきましては、聞き手の思う単なる「予測」を尋ねているので、ふつうwillのほうが好まれる。

I think both are correct grammatically, but for casual conversations such as between two friends, as in this case, “going to” sounds more natural. “Will” is used more in formal writing and conversations, as well as in textbooks.

BTW, if you are still interested in medicine, I am currently reading a book titled, "Mind Over Medicine" by Lissa Rankin, M.D. This book goes deeply into the connection of mind and body, and covers the scientific reasons why the mind can harm or heal one’s health. It’s “anybody” because the way it’s written, the statement means “Your friend has as much energy as ANY ONE out of all the people I have ever met.”

It can’t be “nobody” because you have met some people.

質問:英文の記事より
投稿者: 勝間

これは、1911年3月25日に起きた Triange Shirtwaist 社の火災を題材にした文章です。

Triangle Shirtwaist社で火災が発生し、それに気づいた従業員が消火器を取り出したところ、ホースが劣化していて使い物にならず、やがてフロア全体に火が回った。そのフロアの従業員は脱出できたものの、上のフロアの従業員への連絡が遅れ、結局多数の犠牲者を出してしまった。この火災により、労働環境の安全を守る(?)法律に対する民衆の抗議が起こった。

…と以下の文章に続くわけですが、

The Triangle Shirtwaist fire brought a public outcry for laws to regulate the safety of working conditions. The New York Factory Investigating Commission was formed to examine the working conditions in factories throughout the state. Their report introduced many new regulations. The fire had occurred during an era of progressive reform that was beginning to sweep the nation, as people decided that government had a responsibility to ensure that private industry protected the welfare of working people.

最後の1文(The fire had occurred … of working people)の as だけが理解できません。

これは、辞書で調べてもこれといって適切な意味が見つからず、他で質問をしてみましたが、",when〜" という解釈と、"because" の解釈の2つに分かれ、結局わからなかったので、ダニエルさんの意見を聞かせてください。

In this case, the word "as" can be interpreted as "when" or "while".

Corrections as follows:

"There was a time when I often went to [the movies], but I haven't been going a lot lately."

In American English, "to go to the theater to see a movie" is often shortened to "go to the movies" (even if you are going to see only one title)

"There was a time when I read [the Bible], but I don't read it these days."

People who are religious refer to the 聖書 as "the Bible".

"There was a time when I practiced [speaking]French, but I don't do it any more."

Either "speaking French" or "French conversation".

ダニエルさんこんにちは。またよろしくお願いします。
日本人には無宗教の人が多いです。西洋人に、「子供の頃とかに、神様を信じなかった時期はありましたか?」と聞きたいのですが、「時期」にあたる単語が分かりません。

辞書を見たところ、対応するのは「time」のような気もしますが、教えてください。

Did you have a time you didn't believe in God in your childhood? のような表現をしますでしょうか?

よろしくお願いします。*\(^o^)/*

Make that:

"Was there ever a time in your childhood when you didn't believe in God?"

Keep "time" and "in your childhood" together. You don't want it to read "God in your childhood"

Thank you so much, Daniel-san.

I've got two questions after reading your reply.

The first one is whether the "when" in the sentence you gave is a relative adverb or a conjunction. It's probably a relative adverb and when clause would be describing "a time", but I'd like to make sure of it to be accurate.

The second question is whether I could drop the "when" when I don't use the phrase "in your childhood" in the sentence and when clause is placed right after "a time" which is modified by the clause, like "was there ever a time you didn't believe in God?" Or do I always have to use "when" in this kind of sentence structure?

I really do appreciate your help.

Hana. :)

It's definitely not a conjunction, so I guess it's the other one. (*_*)

If you drop the "when", then you'd have:

"Was there ever a time you didn't believe in God?"

To make it sound right, you need the "when" in there.

ダニエルさん
whenは必要なのですね。教えていただいてありがとうございました。

もう1個お願いしても大丈夫でしょうか?

動詞を「didn't believe」→「doubted」に変更した場合、文はどうなりますか?

「神様が存在することを疑った時期はありますか?」の英語は
Was there ever a time when you doubted God existed?" でいいでしょうか?

よろしくお願いします。\(^o^)/

I would say

"Was there ever a time when you doubted [the existence of] God?"

or

"Was there ever a time when you doubted [that God exists?]"

できない(to not be able)」→「2.できるようになってくる」→「3.できる(to be able)」、という風に「1.出来ない状態」から「3.出来る状態」に成りつつあるときに使う表現です。

「最近、字幕なしでストーリーが分かるようになって来ています」
  ↓
「I've been becoming able to understand a story without seeing subtitles.」 と考えましたが、英語ネイティブはどういう言い方をするのが自然でしょうか?

教えてください。よろしくお願いします。

もう少し教えて欲しいのですがお願いします。単数・複数についてです。

I'm starting to be able to understand the story line in a movie without subtitles.

I'm starting to be able to understand the story lineS in movieS without subtitles.
でも、どちらでもいいのでしょうか?

一般的なことを言いたいときに単数にすべきか、複数にすべきかいつも悩んでしまいます。

よろしくお願いします。

#2: I'm starting to be able to understand the story lineS in movieS without subtitles.

I would use #1 because, although people watch many movies, they can only watch one movie at a time.

So the meaning is, “Whenever I watch a movie in English, I can now understand the story line without subtitles.”

単複は意味があって使い分けているのですね。日本人には単複の使い分けはとても難しいです。
でも頑張っていつかは使いこなせるようになりたいです。

ダニエルさんこんにちは。いつも教えていただいてありがとうございます。

「誰が勝つかguessはありますか?」と言いたいですが、guess(名詞)はcountableでしょうか?

Do you have any guess who is more likely to win? と考えましたが、a guess とすべきか、any guess とすべきか、any guesses とすべきかわかりません。

googleさんに聞いてみましたが、どれもあまり検索数が多くありません。言い方そのものが間違っていますでしょうか?(Who do you think is winning? でもいいですが、guessを使った表現を知りたいです)

教えてください。よろしくお願いします。\(^o^)/

>「誰が勝つかguessはありますか?」

The most natural way for me to say that is:

"Do you have any idea who will win?" or "Who do you think will win?"

If I had to use the word "guess", I would make it:

"Any guesses as to who is going to win?"
