Matsubara Yoshimi (Kuroki Hitomi) as a child had frequently been left forgotten by her parents at the kindergarten which she had been enrolled in and never has she forgotten how being abandoned felt like.

Now a grown woman with a 7 year-old daughter of her own, Yoshimi is engaged in a bitter legal tussle with her husband for the custody of their only daughter Ikuko (Kanno Rio). Determined to make life work for the both of them, Yoshimi embarks on a mission to find a job and provide for the both of them a decent roof over their heads. Her work however causes her to neglect her child and Ikuko, during the initial period after her mother started work as a proofreader at a small local publishing firm, has to sit waiting for her mother to pick her up long after school's out.

Yoshimi's search for housing leads them to a ramshackle excuse of an apartment block which the glib-tongued housing agent assures is perfectly solid and stable. He induces Yoshimi into taking the apartment in the end with the promise of low rent, new wallpaper and finishings despite the fact that the unit is unusually damp/humid.

Ikuko wanders off while Yoshimi is busy viewing the flat and Yoshimi runs round the building looking for her only to find Ikuko on the roof carrying a little red school-bag. The bag is handed over to the Building Manager who subsequently bins it but the bag mysteriously appears again on the roof to be found by Ikuko again.

This is just the beginning of the strange happenings in Yoshimi's life as Yoshimi discovers only after she's moved in, a damp spot on the ceiling that is dripping water from the unit above her's and the spot is enlarging by the day. In addition to the dripping water, sounds of someone jumping/running around is heard but no one answers when Yoshimi calls on the occupants of the unit to discuss the matter.

Dark Water truly lives up to it's name as it's pouring 80% of the time throughout the entire movie with an overcast sky even if it's not raining. The real reason behind Dark Water being Dark Water can be seen somewhere towards the end of the movie and that, I'm afraid, you'll have to see for yourself.

Dark Water is essentially a story that is woven round the theme of abandoned children and their need for motherly love. The way in which the tale is told is quite characteristic of The Ring series but this movie fails to thrill nor capture the attention of the audience throughout the duration of the movie as The Ring did. It was eerie in various parts of the movie but only the last half hour was really truly gripping.

For a slight taste as to what the movie is like, here's the link to its official website for your information :
