When we were doing self-introductions in turn, one student took too much time himself and "しかも" talked with so bad pronunciation. My teacher seemed he "もう" wanted to move on to the next.

"次の人に進む" の感じは、"move on to the next" で、自然でしょうか?

"When we were doing self-introductions in turn, one student took [way] too much time and [he even spoke] with [very] bad pronunciation. My teacher seemed [he’d had enough and] wanted to move on to the next [student].”

You don’t need “himself” because self-introduction implies each person does it by him/herself.

Use “speak” because he was introducing himself in English, to him a foreign language. It’s "speak English", not "talk English". Talk means more of having a conversation. "We talked about the English language."

To have had enough means you don’t want any more of it or you can’t take it anymore. E.g., “I'm leaving you, Bill. I've had enough!”

>"次の人に進む" の感じは、"move on to the next" で、自然でしょうか?

Yes, that was good.

もう in general is already. “Are you going home already?” "Let's go! I want to get going already!" So you could also say “My teacher seemed he wanted to move on to the next student already.”

>疑問があるのですが、at schoolとat the school両方をよく拝見します。

It's good that you asked me. I think this was my error. Sorry about that. "School" is an example of a word that doesn't always need a "the".

I go to the office.
I go to the supermarket.
I go to the gym
but
I go to school. (a general statement)

But it does need a "the" in some cases:

"I go to the school that's on 15th Street."

or

"That's the school I went to 30 years ago."

In each case of the two examples above, I'm trying to say something specific about the school.

In "That's because she helps [out at] school a lot" you don't need "the" because you, your kids, and your kids' friends all know which school you are talking about.

I hope that helps

In my English conversation class, we were doing self-introdustions one by one. I hate doing self-introdustion because my English is not good enough to do it and I also don't like to talk about myself to someone who is not so close to me, but even if I didn't want it, my turn was coming next. In the moment, somebody walked into the class, so I said to him "Now is your turn to introduce yourself. We are doing self-introdustions now.", and I succeeded to hold off my turn for a while. After he finished his self-introduction, my turn finally came. I still didn't want to talk about myself, so before I started, I said "I'm hoping somebody will show up again" and people laughed with it. Then after all, I had to do my self-introduction even just only a little bit.

Later, I wondered if the tense I used was appropriate or not. In the situation, which was better to use, "I'm hoping that somebody WILL SHOW UP again" or "I'm hoping that somebody IS SHOWING UP again" ?

それから、"will show up" と "is showing up" ではどっちが状況に合っている言い方でしょうか?

"I'm hoping that somebody WILL SHOW UP again" と、
"I'm hoping that somebody IS SHOWING UP again"

I should have corrected it before, but I would make that "I'm hoping that somebody [WOULD] SHOW UP again."

It's a hope, so it's only a possibility. E.g., "I wish it would rain" (that's actually a title of a song by the Motown group, the Temptations).

"Will" is used in a definitive statement, so you can't use that in a "hope".

"I mailed the card two days in advance [of] your birthday, but I guess it didn't make it."

You can say that, but it's more commonly this:

"I mailed the card two days ago [so it would] make it to [you for] your birthday, but I guess it didn't make it."

You should give a minimum of three days for first-class mail.

If your friend's birthday has already past but you still want to send a card, most people write "A Belated Happy Birthday Wishes!" or something like that.

“He has played the same character (The Mad Hatter) on three different series: "Batman" (1992), "Superman" (1996) and "The New Batman Adventures" (1997). “(http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001522/bio)

“He played the same character on three different series: "Batman" (1992), "Superman" (1996) and "The New Batman Adventures" (1997).”

You are right. The verb should be used in the past tense.

In the biography for Roddy McDowell on Wikepedia, past tense is used:

"McDowall played 'The Bookworm' in the 1960s American TV series Batman, and he had an acclaimed recurring role as 'The Mad Hatter' in Batman: The Animated Series . . . ."

Three r's in "transferring"

Most people say "photo" so you should start saying that. The reason is that a "picture" can be a lot of things--a drawing, a painting, a sketch, photograph--but if you say "photo" it can only mean one thing.

You should avoid the word "hell" and use "living hell" (or even "nightmare") for a miserable situation.

Instead of truying to translate literally maybe I would say it this way:

"You think it's a living hell now? You haven't seen anything yet. But you hang in there, and you'll make it because you're strong."

I really like the term 頑張れ. There's nothing equivalent that's commonly used in English. Instead, people usually say "Good luck!" But luck isn't the only thing that's important--effort is more important. If someone says "I have a test tomorrow" or "I have an interview" tomorrow", instead of saying "good luck" like everyone else, I prefer to say "Do your best!"

Do your best!

>Lion

>Mr.Daniel
Thank you so much.I can understand what you say.

Many religious people believe that hell is a place for only dead people who were bad. You can find examples of "living hell" on in the Internet. E.g., chemotherapy made my life a living hell.

I remember back in the early 1970s, some American TV dramas avoided saying the word "hell" and instead said something like "H-E-L-L" (saying each letter separately) or "H, E, double hockey stick" (because the stick looks like an "L").

kumi> Are you the same person as somebody who was using the name kumiko before?

Are you the same person who was using the name kumiko before?

Do you remember me? I'm the same Cathy who used to come to this chatroom sometimes before.

That even sounds better than what you had before.

"Do you remember me? I'm the same Cathy who used to come to this chatroom sometimes."

That was really you?! I'm just kidding.

I would leave out the "before" because you're already implying that it was in the past by saying "used to".

"I think I'll still need so much time until [I become able to speak English well, but I hope I'm moving [towards] it even if it's little by little."

If you say "I'll" you're talking about the future, so take the second "I'll" out. You don't want to say "in the future, I hope to be able to do something in the future".

"one day at a time" is another way to say

I didn't shut the water bottle cap and my phone got wet. Now my camera's not working. I was wondering how much it would cost if I get fixed.

"I'd forgotten to (忘れて) completely close the cap of my water bottle that I had in my bag, and when I noticed that (気が付いた時) everything in my bag was soaked, including my cell phone. The cell phone's camera function doesn't work anymore, so I wanted to know if it's possibe to have it repaired, and if so how much it would cost."

I had a big fight with my boyfriend a few days ago. Since then, he would never answer my calls and would never even reply to my emails. I don't want to break up with him, but I'm expecting that he might really dump me this time.

「I'm expecting that 〜」を、

If you say "I don't want to break up with him, but I'm expecting that he [will] really dump me this time."

you're pretty certain that he'll dump you.

If you say " I don't want to break up with him, but I'm [afraid] he might really dump me this time.

You are saying you don't really want him to dump you but he most likely will.

If you want to use the word "might", say it this way:

"I don't want to break up with him, but he might really dump me this time."

"I had a big fight with my boyfriend a few days ago. Since then, he never answer[s] my calls [or] even repl[ies] to my emails."

Since it's a fact and not a possibility or a hypothetical, it sounds better without "wouldn't"
